Employment Law
The universe of labor and employment law is ever-expanding. Whether the employer has one employee or one thousand, employment law regulates hiring and managing people in the modern workplace to a high degree. It is also a critical factor in any decision to terminate employment. The complex weave of federal and state laws that apply to the employer-employee relationship creates cross-currents that are daunting even to experienced lawyers. For sure, no employer, human resource manager, or supervisor can afford to navigate these legal waters by dead reckoning alone.

The primary goal of this presentation is to provide a working familiarity with the various laws that affect recruitment, hiring, terms and conditions of employment, discipline and termination. Our goal is not to overwhelm but to shed light and empower good decision-making.

Front Yard Leadership
The presentation will focus on tactical considerations and priorities and how they would support the overall strategic goals for suburban and/or rural fire officers. In a not so perfect fire service world, today’s fire officers are arriving on scene right before or right after the first due companies. These fire officers are commanding a fire scene with limited manpower and/or minimum staffed engine companies. These command office may or may not know there manpower or even the training level of personnel until the units arrival. This disadvantage forces the incident commander to adjust their tactical priorities on the fly. The course will cover the following topics:
  • Rapid Size up (Size-up Priorities)
  • Construction considerations (modern vs legacy)
  • Tactical Priorities for limited manpower
  • Attack methods and weapon (nozzle/hose) selection

High Performance Leadership
Following years of experience in Fire Department Leadership, Kelly Walsh, and Chief Dan Jones (Retired) have developed a High Performance Leadership Academy in both in-person and on-line formats.  NC based, they have been teaching this program nationwide in order to fill the gap in leadership training for Company Officers, Chief Officers, and those aspiring to those levels.

For NCAFC, they have customized a short 2-hour program with a sampling of academy topics. Mini sessions on functional leadership skills and also leadership intangibles will be shared. Come see why this training is becoming an essential for leaders who want to engage and develop the employees on their teams with take-away tools they can use immediately.

Understanding Firefighter Suicide
Suicide is the end result of serious internal struggles that can manifest for some time before the decedent makes the decision to die by suicide. These struggles are often multi-factored and include environmental, biological, and personal factors. Firefighters feel a sense of responsibility to the community and have been found to suppress their underlying factors.  This is a key contributor to suicide and can be prevented through creating a culture that encourages help seeking behavior. This program explains how to accomplish this through the following:

Objectives:

• Understanding the commonality of mental health disorders
• Recognizing the power of prevention through simple daily practices
• Common Myths Surrounding Suicide
• Addressing Risk Factors
• Understand the protective factors associated with prevention such as stress management.
• Company Officer / Department responsibilities.

Establishing & Maintaining Peer Support
This presentation is designed to teach members and leaders the components of a working peer support program.  We explain how we developed the North Carolina Peer Support Team and how we built resources for the team.  We also discuss partnerships with other national leading peer support programs.

Peer Support Training provides an introduction to the techniques of emergency responder psychological first aid as it is provided to firefighters by firefighters. It is in line with the National Fallen Firefighters’ Foundation’s Everyone Goes Home project and the 13 the Life Safety Initiative: Firefighters and their families must have access to counseling and psychological support services.

Students learn the components of behavioral health and the commonality of behavioral health disorders. They learn how to actively listen and be there for other members in need, but more importantly, they learn resources available for themselves and others. Peer supporters recognize that their job is not to counsel or solve another member’s problem, but to simply be there, nonjudgmentally, and know the resources available.

Autism Recognition & Response for First Responders
This class is designed to help responders identify characteristics in Autistic individuals that they may encounter on responses. Responders will gain knowledge of how to approach, interact and provide treatment to someone with autism. Autism affects 1 in 59 children born in the US, it is in every community in the nation. It affects all ethnic and socioeconomic groups and there is no medical detection for autism. This class helps responders understand that 30%-40% of all autistic people are non-verbal and the different methods needed to communicate with those individuals. I have taught this class 12 times at various departments in the western region, and it is an often overlooked area in our profession.
